Moving: it’s exciting, exhausting, and seriously stressful. Finding and securing a new home is challenging enough, but the actual process of moving – the packing, the schlepping, the logistics – can easily send you into meltdown mode if you’re not properly prepared.

At Master Movers, we pack items ourselves, so we know how important it is to avoid damaging price possessions in transit.

Here are a few tips to help you move smoothly.

The sofas

The first thing you need to do is measure the sofa and the space that you’re moving to. Measure any tight corners or doorways along the way. Remove any cushions to make the sofa lighter, also, if possible, remove any feet that might damage doors. If you’re sliding the sofa across a hard floor, use some carpet underneath to prevent damage.

As a value-added service, Master Movers will provide you with blankets to cover and move your sofas.

Mirrors and framed artworks

These items are easily damaged, luckily there are a few tips you can use to prevent breakage. Place large masking tape across the front of the glass. This does not only strengthen the glass during the move but keeps the glass together in the unfortunate event of breakage. Place a piece of cardboard over the entire front area of the picture and then wrap the whole thing in breathable bubble wrap. Don’t forget to mark it fragile; you might know it’s breakable, but others who move it might not.

Books

Books can be deceptively heavy, and it’s easy to damage them during a move. Pack your books in a double-walled box; this makes heavy books a lot easier to move without having to worry that it’s going to break.

Jewellery

It’s essential to keep your jewellery protected by preventing it from getting tangled or getting lost. For a chunky necklace, use an empty toilet roll, feed it through and clasp it together. For more delicate items, use a drinking straw, and for individual rings or pairs of earrings, use an egg box filled with cottonwool.

Please note that Master Movers can not pack and move your jewellery for you and will not be held liable for any damage or loss of any jewellery items.

Clothes

It’s quite daunting to think about unpacking each clothing item individually. The key is to keep the pieces together. Once you group clothes together, pull a black bag over them and secure it at the top and place it in one of our wardrobe boxes. During the move, the clothes will stay protected and clean. When you get to the other end, simply open the box, unhook the black bag and hang the clothes up.
