Moving with pets comes with its own set of obstacles. Your pets are probably experiencing the same anxiety and excitement that comes with moving day as you are. Here are some tips to help you and your pets to make an easy transition into your new home.

Prepare an Overnight Kit

You probably packed an “overnight” or “first-night” bag for yourself to help you get settled in your new home. Your pets are going to need one too. The bag should contain your pets’ favorite toys, their leash, blanket, treats, water bowls, litter box, and any medication needed.

Contact your Vet

Visit your veterinarian for advice or recommendations beforehand. Your vet can help you to update your pets’ vaccinations and do any flea checks needed if they are due. If your pet needs medications, be sure to have it refilled so that you don’t run out during your move. Your vet can assist you by recommending a natural sedative for long distance moves or for a pet that is experiencing severe anxiety.

Don’t let your Pet Out til you Arrive

You might want to take pets outside to immediately explore their new surroundings but this isn’t the best choice for their safety. It can be overwhelming to pets and they can become lost. Your pets need an adjustment period in their kennel, carriers, etc. It is best to keep them in carriers or crates until they are safely inside the home and everyone is settled in. Pets can also sustain injuries if your moving company is still moving your belongings into your new premises. Keep your pets safely indoors until your movers are done with their job and ensure all doors are closed before letting them out.
