Packing and moving is already a daunting task; moving with extra goods makes it even worse. If you are doing the move yourself, you’ll have to pack and move all those extra items; and if you hire a moving company, you’ll pay more to move junk you don’t use or want anymore. To keep moving day as easy and stress-free as possible, declutter before you start packing.
Below are some decluttering tips to use before you move.
Allow enough time
Don’t wait until the day before the big move to start decluttering. Instead, give yourself at least two weeks for decluttering. Designate a few hours in a day to tackle a different room or closet in your home. By working in smaller chunks, you can easily organize what you want to keep and what you want to donate or sell.
Use up what you have extra of
If you have excessive toiletries such as toilet paper or shampoo, start using up the excess now so you’ll have less to take with you. If you run out before you are in your new house, only buy the necessity. This is important with food products especially if you are going to do a long-distance move.
Use a three-box system
For every room, you declutter, use 3 boxes one for stuff you’ll keep, one for stuff you will chuck, and one for stuff to donate or sell. As you declutter your closets and drawers, drop each item into one of the three boxes.
Employ the Practicality Test
If you’re not sure if you should keep or get rid of something, ask yourself if you need or use this item. For example, If you haven’t worn something in a year, the probability of you wearing it again is slim, so put it in the donate box. With items like sheets, towels, or kitchen utensils, check for duplicates. While it might be helpful to have three sets of sheets, one or two will do. The same goes for hand towels and spatulas.
Check Expiration Dates
We all have a cupboard containing a few items that have reached their parish date. Before you pack anything, check the expiration date, spices can last for years but lose their taste. In the bathroom, many makeup products such as mascara and base expire after a year, this is an excellent time to toss products you don’t use anymore.
Donate or Sell your unwanted items
Once you’ve finished decluttering every room in your home, either sell what you don’t want or donate it to charity. You’ll finally get rid of that clutter, and you’ll make a little bit of cash to help towards your moving costs. Keep in mind that Master Movers can help you transport your donation. The first batch delivery will be free of cost.
